First female Twin Otter Commander at SATENA strengthens regional connectivity
Bogotá, march de 2026
On short runways, in remote airports, and in regions where flying is not a privilege but an essential condition, a significant story for Colombian aviation is being written once again. SATENA, "the airline of all Colombians," announced the appointment of Ángela María Jiménez Gil as a Pilot Commander of the Twin Otter, one of the most versatile aircraft in its social and regional operations. With over three decades of experience in commercial aviation, Jiménez Gil becomes the first woman to command a Twin Otter at SATENA—an achievement that transcends the symbolic and aligns with the airline's historical purpose: bringing connectivity, medical care, food, and opportunities to territories where air transport is vital.
"SATENA does not just connect regions; it connects dreams, vocations, and opportunities. Ángela María’s arrival at the Twin Otter represents the talent, discipline, and leadership we need to continue fulfilling our social mission in the country's most remote territories," stated Major General Óscar Zuluaga Castaño, President of SATENA.
From the cockpit of an aircraft designed to operate on short and unprepared runways, the pilot returns to being an active part of the operation that defines SATENA's social character—now backed by more advanced technology and higher safety standards, without losing the versatility that has characterized the Twin Otter for decades.
These aircraft are known for their operations out of Medellín, specifically from Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH), connecting the region with strategic destinations such as El Bagre, Caucasia, Montelíbano, Quibdó, Nuquí, Bahía Solano, and Condoto, facilitating access to territories where air connectivity is fundamental.
"Flying was always my passion. Since I was a girl, I said I was going to be a pilot and I never let go of that dream. The day of my first solo flight was one of the happiest of my life; it was just me, the plane, and the sky," Jiménez Gil recalls.
Her journey was not without challenges. In a historically male-dominated environment, she took on the challenge of commanding aircraft at a young age, earning the respect of crews and technical teams through knowledge, discipline, and leadership. "I had to prove with a very solid foundation that I could do it. Over time, respect followed, and I understood that preparation always paves the way," she notes.
For Jiménez Gil, returning to the Twin Otter holds a special meaning. It was the aircraft that marked her beginnings, and today it represents the possibility of joining her two great passions: flying and serving. "This plane allows me to truly help. Reaching places where there is no other form of access, transporting the sick, medicines, and connecting communities. Here, I feel my two passions have come together," she says.
Beyond her professional achievement, Ángela María embraces her role as a role model for girls and young women dreaming of aviation. "Nothing is impossible when you fight for what you want. This path is achieved through perseverance, dedication, and never giving up. If that is the dream, it is possible," she concludes.
With stories like this, SATENA reaffirms that its mission goes beyond operating flights: it is about connecting regions, closing gaps, and opening opportunities for new generations who, from the air, continue to build the country.
About SATENA:
SATENA is the state-owned airline of Colombia, founded in 1962. Since its inception, it has played a fundamental role in providing air connectivity to remote and hard-to-reach regions of the country. Its primary goal is to provide air transport services to isolated communities, fostering socio-economic development and tourism. Throughout its 63 years, the airline has successfully expanded its route network, connecting cities and destinations that were previously unreachable for many. Its commitment is based on "reaching where no one else goes," offering essential air connectivity for activities such as trade and medical care in remote areas.
